Top 3 most common bookbinding types

Carefully considering the type of binding that you will use for a novel, valuable research, fiction, or autobiography is a must. With so many binding options available, each with its unique features and uses, it can be hard to determine the best one for your needs. Here are some common book binding types and the information you require.

Double wiring with a plastic coil

Coil binding, as the name implies, uses plastic coils to bind or hold together printed material. Small holes are made on the book bind edge of the cover and printed material. Once this is done, the plastic coil can be woven into the holes.

This process is also used for double wiring binding. Instead of plastic coils, the method uses double-loop wires inserted through the punched holes. Plastic coils and double wiring are ideal for calendars, notebooks, and presentations that require constant page removal. This is also great for materials that need to be flattened on a surface.

Hardcover or casebound

Hardcover, also called case binding, can be considered one of the most valuable options. Hardcovers protect printed materials thanks to their thick, rigid cover. Hardcovers make books more durable and last longer. The pages are sewn together and then glued to the endpapers. Finally, the spine is glued to the spine cover. Hardcover books can be opened and laid flat on the surface when opened.

Perfect binding

Although it has many similarities to hardcover binding, it is much more affordable. Perfect binding is made with thick cardstock, and the spine is threaded, glued, and covered with thick cardstock. Perfect binding is an excellent alternative to hardcover and still practical for creative presentation ideas. Perfect binding is ideal for fiction and nonfiction trade paperbacks, large catalogs, and many other uses.
