How To Talk About The Weather In Greek

The first thing one usually discusses with a Greek is the weather. This is the main reason tourists visit Greece. The weather in Greece is a dream for many people, especially those living in northern European countries. In addition, it is a nice topic to talk about for many people. It is something that affects us all directly, and it is interesting to talk about it. So, the first thing they want to talk about is what the weather is like in Greece and their country. In this article, we will first learn how to ask about the weather in Greek and then how to reply. We will separate the answers into four different seasons as it is true that Greece is one of the lucky countries which have four seasons during the year. Let’s go ahead and learn how to talk about the weather in the Greek language.

How To Ask About The Weather

  • The most common question  about the weather in Greek is:

‘’Τι καιρό κάνει;’’ (Te kaero kanei?) ti kairo kanei?

It means what is the weather like?

  • Other questions about the weather are:

‘’Πώς είναι ο καιρός;’’ (Pos einai o kearos?) pos einai o kairos?

or

‘’Τι καιρό έχει;’’ (Te kearo eahe?) Ti kairo echei?

Using these three questions, you will be able to get the reply you are looking for, that is, what the weather is like. But how do you reply to this question? There are many ways to do that. It depends on the season of the year. Let’s see the most important answers you can give to this question.

Winter

In the winter (yes, Greece has winter and often it is freezing and snowing!), you can say many things, as the weather varies. These phrases are also much more useful for people living in a Northern European country. You can reply in winter:

‘’Έχει κρύο / κάνει κρύο’’ (It is cold).

Eahe krio / kane krio.  Echei kryo/kanei kryo

‘’Έχει συννεφιά’’ (It is cloudy)

Eahe sinnefia

‘’Βρέχει’’(It is raining)

Vraehe

Ψιχαλίζει (It is drizzling )

Psihalezi

‘’Χιονίζει’’ (It is snowing)

Hionize

‘’Ο καιρός δεν είναι καλός’’ (The weather is not good)

O kaeros den enae kalos

Κάνει παγωνιά! (It is freezing)

Kane pagonia

Έχει καταιγίδα! (There’s  a storm)

Eahe kategida

Έχει αστραπές και βροντές (There’s thunder and lightning  )

Eahe astrapes kae vrontes

Spring

In the spring the weather gets  better, and I would say that it is beautiful in Greece in this season (much better than summer). So you can say that it is sunny in different ways.

The three ways to say it is sunny are:

‘’Έχει λιακάδα’’ (Eahe liakada)

‘’Έχει ήλιο’’ (Eahe elio)

Είναι ηλιόλουστος (Εane eliolustos)

Whereas if you want to speak about the weather generally or the temperature, you say:

‘’Έχει καλό καιρό’’ (The weather is good)

Eahe kalo kaero

‘’Η θερμοκρασία είναι καλή’’ (The temperature is nice)

E thermokrasia enae kale

Summer

In the summer, there are different ways to say that it is too hot (in Greece, the temperature in some areas goes up to 45 degrees!!). Let’s see the two most common ways to express that:

‘’Έχει καύσωνα!’’ ( There’s a heatwave!)

Eahe kavsona!

‘’Κάνει πολύ ζέστη!’’ (It is too hot!)

Kane poli zesti!

Then, usually, you say what the temperature is. For example, you say:

‘’Έχει καύσωνα.

 Η θερμοκρασία είναι 45 βαθμούς’’

Eahe kavsona! E thermokrasia enae 45 vathmous.

(There’s a heatwave! The temperature is 45 degrees)

You could ask now ‘’Anything else? Do you say anything else about the weather during the summer?’’ No, most people would say only these things because 99% of the time this is how the weather is in the summer.

Autumn

Finally, we have Autumn. Usually, in Greece, the weather is good during fall, and it is also a lovely season to visit Greece and enjoy the weather. However, there is some rain and some wind, especially in Northern Greece and in the mountains. The temperature is usually good in October and November. In September, the weather is almost like summer.  Let’s see what you could say:

Φυσάει! (it is windy)

Fesaee!

Βρέχει λίγο! (It is raining  lightly)

Vraehe ligo!

Η θερμοκρασία είναι καλή! (The temperature is good!)

E thermokrasia eane kali!

‘’Έχει καλό καιρό’’ (The weather is good)

Eahe kalo kaero

If you learn the above phrases, I am sure that you will be able to describe the weather in your country and ask what the weather is like in Greece when you speak with a Greek friend! You will also be able to understand the Greeks when they talk about the weather to you! It would be very nice to ask about the weather the next time you speak to a Greek friend. ,. Happy chatting with Greeks! Greeks are very happy to hear people talking in their native language.
